Understanding Ligament Injury

A ligament injury is damage to a ligament—that connects bone to bone and provide joint stability . It can range from partial or complete tear.
During ligament injury, the affected joint may be painful, swollen , restricted movement.

Most commonly occur ligament injury are anterior cruciate ligament, posterior cruciate ligament, medial collateral ligament, lateral collateral ligament.

  • Stage 1: Early swelling occur during movement
  • Stage 2: Swelling occur after daily work
  • Stage 3: Swelling occur during daily work
  • Stage 4: swelling may occur significantly
  • Stage 5: swelling may occur recurrently
  • Stage 1: Mild reduction in strength of muscle
  • Stage 2: During activity knee muscle get weaken and stability is lost
  • Stage 3: During movement knee joint is continuously lost stability
  • Stage 4: Difficulty in certain movement like stair climbing
  • Stage 5: knee movement is certainly not stable during activity.
  • Stage 1: difficulty during walking
  • Stage 2: Difficulty in climbing stairs
  • Stage 3: Difficulty in doing squatting activity
  • Stage 4: Difficulty in doing running
  • Stage 5: activity limitation during certain movement

  • Strengthening exercise (Quads, hamstring, calf)
  • Step up exercise
  • Balance exercise
  • Walking exercise, stationary cycling

Chronic Phase

Functional Stage

>12 Weeks
  • Progressive resistance training exercise
  • Agility training
  • Balance exercise
  • Squats, lunges etc.
  • Sports specific exercise
