Understanding Knee pain

Knee pain is pain ,stiffness or discomfort felt in around knee joint. It occur suddenly or gradually increased during injury, overuse etc. knee pain occur mainly in older adults due to degenerative condition like knee osteoarthritis

It affects mainly articular cartilage of knee joint.
Wear and tear of knee joint occur during activity and they will be pain, stiffness, reduced functional limitations.

Symptoms and Stages

  • Stage 1: Early stiffness occur during movement
  • Stage 2: Due to bed time also stiffness may occur
  • Stage 3: During activity, there will be restrictions in knee movement
  • Stage 4: Movement restriction will be significantly occur
  • Stage 5: During daily activities there will be stiffness in knee joint will be persistently occur
  • Stage 1: Early swelling occur during activity
  • Stage 2: During certain activity swelling may occur
  • Stage 3: swelling may occur frequently
  • Stage 4: During continuous activity swelling may occur in knee joint persistently.
  • Stage 5: swelling may seen in knee joint recurrently
  • Stage 1: clicking sound may be seen in knee joint occasionally
  • Stage 2: Repeated clicking sound in knee joint during movement
  • Stage 3: clicking sound in knee joint may be painful
  • Stage 4: During certain movement they will be locking of knee joint occur intermittently
  • Stage 5: Locking of knee joint during certain movement occur frequently
  • Stage 1: Mild difficulty during walking
  • Stage 2: Pain occur during repeated stair climbing activity
  • Stage 3: Difficulty in performing the stair climbing activities
  • Stage 4: Significant pain during stair climbing and restrictions in movement
  • Stage 5: Avoid stair climbing activity due to pain

  • Gentle ROM exercise and stretching and strengthening of Quads, hamstring, calf.
  • Active knee flexion and extension, mini squats.

  • Stationary cycling

Sub Acute

Rehabilitation

  • Advanced squats, sut to stands, lunges etc.
  • single leg balance, Dynamic balance
